I Need Something Lifted, What Do I Do?

You have two options, carrying out a lift under CPA Conditions or a Contract Lift:

CPA Conditions Lift – Essentially the responsibility lies with the client and is covered by the clients insurance. The Crane (and potentially Operator) will be hired in, the client will handle all other parts. A consultant could be used to assist.

Contract Lift – A Contract Lift is designed and orchestrated by the Crane Company you are contracting to carry out the operation. It will be their responsibility to ensure all the planning and preparation is carried out meeting all legal requirements. This includes any Road Closures, Crane hire  and all paperwork drawn up by competent and qualified Appointed person. The lifting operation will be covered by the Crane Companies insurance and they will be responsible for the smooth and safe running.

What Is An Appointed Person?

An Appointed Person is generally the person within a Crane Company who will be responsible for planning contract lifts or acting as a consultant for lifting operations. To comply with legal requirements (LOLER Regulations and British Standards Bs7121), the Appointed Person must be trained and competent.

How Can I Check If Someone Is Trained & Competent?

The Construction Plant Competence Scheme came into effect in 2003 and is a single card scheme that any operative is required to have in order to work within the industry. There are different categories of card which covers 62 areas. The scheme is industry led and is governed by a management committee keeping it relevant. Card Holders are subject to both Theory and Practical tests and Health and Safety is a key component. To check someone card you are able to use this online facility below:

How Much Notice Do You Need For A Lifting Operation?

Different Lifting operations have various requirements and factors and this will determine different timescales such as Road Closures and Local Authority Work Permits so the more notice the better. However for a lift that does not require intricacies such as those detailed above, Lift Assist would require a minimum of three days to ensure a full and proper site survey/assessment, consultation with client and relevant paperwork to be drawn up.

Where Do You Operate?

Lift Assist are based and work predominately within London and the South East but we have been requested and are happy to assist whereever needed.

This is just a basic guide to try and cover some of the questions we are often initially asked, however, we are just at the end of the phone….call us for more information.
